Product Overview

Sorbic Acid, also known as 2,4-Hexadienoic Acid, is a food additive that inhibits the growth of yeasts, molds, and many fungi. It is also used in animal feed, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, packaging materials, and rubber additives. Sorbic acid is a highly efficient and safe preservative widely used in the food, beverage, tobacco, pesticide, and cosmetics industries.

Production Process

  1. Ketene Method: This method is widely used internationally for industrial production. Acetic acid is pyrolyzed at high temperatures to produce ketene, which is then condensed with crotonaldehyde to form a polyester. After hydrolysis and purification, the final product is obtained. Raw material consumption quota: Ketene 510kg/t, crotonaldehyde 1100kg/t.
  2. Malonic Acid Method: Malonic acid and crotonaldehyde are condensed and decarboxylated to obtain the product.
  3. Acetone Method: Acetone is condensed with crotonaldehyde and then dehydrogenated to obtain the product.
  4. Butadiene Method: Butadiene and acetic acid are used as raw materials, and under the presence of a manganese acetate catalyst at 140°C, γ-vinyl-γ-butyrolactone is synthesized. Under the action of an acidic ion exchange resin, butyrolactone undergoes ring-opening to obtain sorbic acid.
  5. Acetic AcidPyrolysis: Acetic acid is pyrolyzed at high temperatures to produce ketene, which is then condensed with crotonaldehyde to form polyester, followed by hydrolysis and purification to obtain the final product.
  6. Tobacco Process: At 0ºC, butyraldehyde and ketene react under the catalysis of boron trifluoride; or butyraldehyde and malonic acid are heated in the presence of pyridine to produce the product.

Functions and Effects

Preservative.

Applications

  1. Widely used in the food, beverage, pickle, tobacco, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and agricultural product industries. Also used in the preparation of preservatives, mold inhibitors, insecticides, and synthetic rubber industries. Inhibitor of molds and yeasts. Food mold inhibitor. Desiccant oil denaturant. Bactericide.
  2. Sorbic acid and potassium sorbate are the most widely used preservatives internationally, with high antibacterial performance. They inhibit the growth and reproduction of molds by inhibiting the dehydrogenase system within microorganisms, thus preventing microbial growth and acting as a preservative. They are effective against molds, yeasts, and many aerobic bacteria, but almost ineffective against anaerobic spore-forming bacteria and lactic acid bacteria. Widely used as a preservative in various cheese products, bread, pastry products, beverages, fruit juices, jams, pickles, and fish products. The amount used in concentrated fruit and vegetable juice packed in plastic barrels should not exceed 2g/kg; in soy sauce, vinegar, jam, hydrogenated vegetable oil, soft candies, dried fish products, ready-to-eat soybean products, cake fillings, bread, cakes, and mooncakes, the maximum usage is 1.0g/kg; in wine and fruit wine, the maximum usage is 0.8g/kg; in collagen casings, low-salt pickles, sauces, candied fruits, fruit juice (flavor) beverages, and jellies, the maximum usage is 0.5g/kg; in fresh fruits and vegetables and carbonated beverages, the maximum usage is 0.2g/kg; in the food industry, it can be used in meat, fish, egg, and poultry products with a maximum usage of 0.075g/kg.
  3. Used in detergents, cosmetics, feed, pharmaceuticals, etc.
